Book Review: The 5th Wave by Rick Yancey

In honor of dragging my husband to see The 5th Wave movie here is my review that I posted back in December on Goodreads.

Update: The movie was super BLAH! :(((

5 stars for The 5th Wave

But if I’m it, the last of my kind, the last page of human history, like hell I’m going to let the story end this way. I may be the last one, but I am the one still standing. I am the one turning to face the faceless hunter in the woods on an abandoned highway. I am the one not running but facing. Because if I am the last one, then I am humanity. And if this is humanity’s last war, then I am the battlefield.

The first wave they take out the power, batteries, anything electronic or motorized. The second wave earthquakes, tsunamis, natural disasters. The third wave— take Ebola and put it on steroids. This takes out 97% of the world. The fourth wave is silencers, alien operatives with the task to take out the last survivors, those immune to the plague. Now, we’re trying to figure out what the fifth wave will be and when it will come.

How do you rid the Earth of humans? Rid the humans of their humanity.

We’re here, and then we’re gone, and it’s not about the time we’re here, but what we do with the time.

There were so many surprises in each chapter. I felt shocked a number of times. I couldn’t figure out what was the truth and what was the lie. I didn’t know who to believe or who had it right or wrong, who was crazy or who was sane. I felt like I had gone “Dorothy” a few times.

Cassie is a great heroine, she is likable in all the ways it counts and you root for her to succeed. She is a survivor. I especially love a book that tells a story through someone telling a story, like Cassie with her journals. I don’t want to say too much about other characters because I was surprised by who a few of the characters were or turned out to be. Of course you have a hunch, but there is nothing like reading a part of the book and being like “I KNEW IT!” so I won’t ruin anything.

I hate to admit this, but I saw a preview of the movie release while watching Mockingjay Pt. 2 and thought ‘oh man, I need to pick up this book before the movie comes out!’ I had seen plenty of great reviews of it, but just hadn’t gotten around to reading it yet. It is everything I hoped it would be and I can’t wait for the major motion picture!
